Environmental management
Frequently one can hear the provocative statement:
Expenditure and benefits are unrelated to each other, so is the introduction of an environmental management profitable at all?
The answer is a clear Yes! On the one hand, the environment benefits from these efforts; on the other hand, an efficient and well-thought-out environmental management can also lead to considerable cost savings. Furthermore, the significant increase in the company's reputation in the view of your customers is not to be underestimated.
Regarding the requirements of environmental management systems (EMS) the first globally valid standard was established with the norm DIN EN ISO 14001:1996. The current version is dated as of November 2015 and is now taking a leadership role compared with alternative environmental management concepts. As well as, both quality management (QM) and environmental management (EM) are strategic management tasks for companies. In addition to legal requirements, triggers for an environmentally oriented management include also topics, such as „environmental and climate protection“, „scarcity and price increase of natural resources“ and the ever-increasing „demand for ecological and sustainable products“. An EMS is also based on a continuous improvement process (IPC) as defined by the PDCA cycle and comprises consequently structural parallels to other management systems, which, for example, accommodates the construction of an integrated management system (IMS). Compared to the previous version from 2009, the revised and currently valid standard DIN EN ISO 14001:2015 focuses not only on a stronger stakeholder orientation, but also on issues such as risk assessment, environmental performance measurement and the consideration of the life cycle of a product (also known as "cradle-to-grave" principle).
